Yes ladies...this is the love of my life. No, not Santa...that's my dad, but the crazy guy next to the man in red. Yup...charming isn't he?? Well, this charming man will be running my shop tomorrow. Either way, come meet this goofy guy and stock up on fabric at the same time. Moving on to Christmas festivities. We had a wonderful Christmas. Santa brought us some great gifts. Max is convinced his wooden wand is real. There happened to be a dead rabbit in our front yard and he called his brothers over to the window and told them he killed the rabbit with his "abracadabra" Harry Potter spell. The boys actually believed him!! Bennett got the lego Hogwarts Castle and Harry got some gogos and a small lego set too. Bennett also received the Harry Potter book set. He is on a roll and has finished almost three books.
Santa made an apperance Christmas Eve at my step brother's home which actually was the house I grew up in with my mother and he bought it about a year ago...crazy right? Either way, it was fun. The boys loved to see santa!

Bennett had a birthday this month as well. The big 9. I'm not sure when he got so old but we love having him in our family. He has become such a great help. I love his enthusiasm for life.

Old Webster HOLIDAY WALK is this Sunday from 10-5. Fabric Nosherie has plenty planned and the whole down will be decorated in anticipation for Christmas. There will be trolley and carriage rides as well as Carolers and Mr. Claus himself! Bring your kids and join me and the other shops welcome in the holidays!

Has it really been 4 weeks since we've been open?! Time has flown. It has been wonderful to meet so many of you. Thank you for your support.

We have gotten in some new fabrics I wanted to show off. Laura Gunn, Heather Ross and Kokka prints from Japan. They are simply gorgeous. Come in and take a look.

(here is where I would post a picture but my computer isn't cooperating with me.....(sigh) )

Also, this Saturday is Art around Town in Webster Groves. It is going to be a great day planned for the whole family. Here is the link. We are honored to have Jerri Stroud as our artist in the shop for the day. She will have her pixilated quilts on display. She is extremely talented and will be demoing her hand quilting. We will have a quilt here you can practice your own hand quilting and the kids can get involved to. We have Mr. Spidey they can make using the handwork for $5.50. (here is where I put a picture in of Mr. Spidey.....(sigh) ). This can be made at the shop or taken home. Oh, and have your kids wear their HALLOWEEN COSTUMES! Shops are giving out candy! It is going to be a fantastic day all around. We hope you'll consider coming to Old Webster this Saturday.

Classes!!

We will be starting classes next week! YAY! There are still seats available. We have fantastic teachers lined up and couldn't be more excited.

We will be having a kids beginning sewing as well as adult beginning sewing. We are also having a project based class starting next week which we'll make Poppy Patterns Messenger Bag. Super fun!!

A kids sewing club is also in the works. I'm the most excited for that. Who wouldn't want to sit with friends, sew and eat ice cream?!?

Bus Tour!

The bus tour was amazing!! We met some great people. Look how cute she is to have her Laura Gunn fabric?!? This was the bus from Texas. They were awesome! They were all so kind to us. I was so glad to kick the bus tour off with such fantastic women.

We're all alive (barely)

I have neglected my blog, true -but for good reason. See my sweet little boy? This is him on his 7th birthday a few weeks ago. Notice the nice looking cast? He had an accident and literally cut the tip of his finger off in a door. In case you didn't read the last blog I will quickly update you: We have had two surgeries, 3 doctor's visit, an infection and the re-growing tip flying through the air in one of his wrestling fits (it was like slow motion watching it happen. I sat there and said, "that was just his tip"). That has all happened in three weeks. OH, and did I mentioned we moved 3 weeks ago too??Here is what you've been waiting to see. This is the checkout "bar". I call it a bar because it will end up looking like the bar my husband put in TASTE. I think it turned out wonderful, its obviously not completed but I like it. I think the broom adds an extra nice touch...don't you think?

I don't wan to give the whole store away so I won't show you too much, just a little sneak but behind this gorgeous sewing machine you can see just how we've displayed the fabrics.

This machine was given to display in the window by the sweet, generous Meryl, owner of Dr. Jazz three doors down. They have been so incredibly kind to us these past months. If you've never eaten at Dr. Jazz you must give it a shot, especially for ice cream!
This is how we've hung the fabrics. They are railroad type ties. Pretty industrial. I like how it looks. We still have plenty to do before opening day which is....(drum roll please).....not this weekend like planned. :( sorry, too much happened and pushed me back at least a week. I will have the store "opened" for the Jazz festival on the 17th. I can't have a big open house that day because the street is closed off for the big festivities that day but if you just can't wait any longer you can come take a peek. I will update everyone on the big opener.. promise.

What I've been spending my time doing....

I've been working so much this summer that we haven't been able to do much as a family. I decided a weekend trip to Chicago was in order. We had a great time. My mom came with us to join in on the fun. We visited Shedd's Aqarium, The Field Museum, Museum of Science and Industry (a crowd favorite), went to the beach, went up in the Willis Tower aka Sears Tower (who changes the name of a famous building?!?!), ate at Gino's East Pizza and of course visited IKEA. Made a haul for the shop! It was great to get away with my favorite guys (and mom).The day after we returned from Chicago my Max boy slammed his finger in the back door of a friends house. He cut the entire tip of his finger off. I won't go into detail in the chance you're reading this while eating, but it was pretty serious. Here is my trooper at the ER. He was amazing, and so strong. He handled the pain so incredibly well. Two days later he had surgery to try to repair the finger. They couldn't reattach the tip but they are trying to "regrow" it. Who knew you could regrow a finger. He has another surgery next week.School started yesterday. My two oldest are in full day and the little blonde is hooraying that he gets mom all to himself. Cute kid. And as if I'm not doing anything else...we're moving this week. My good friend Laura Gunn is moving to DC for two years and asked us to move in and remodel her home. Isn't it crazy how everything happens at once? Oh, and yes, I'm still opening up a shop. So if you're wondering why I haven't updated many pictures of the shop as of lately....well....you know why. Sigh, now back to packing up boxes.

Things are happening...you just can't see them yet

I've had a few comments lately from people who walk by and peek in. "Wow, you still have a ton of work to do...." I'm not sure how to take that. What is amazing is the amount of work you do but yet almost none of it shows. Kind of like being a stay at home mom. Mom's, you work all day long and what do you have to show for it at night?? Maybe a swept floor and clean dishes - for sure sore feet, headaches and exhaustion. Opening up a shop is a lot like that.

The shop will be simple, so simple that as soon as we finish putting up the trim thats it. I don't like a lot of clutter - I think it takes away from things....specifically fabric things.

So if you happen to walk by and think, "wow, she has a ton of work to do still" remember the dream, the image, simple, simple, simple - and most importatly, don't panic! It will be open!!

What could be more fun then getting fabric??

Boxes....lot of boxes to cut up and make into rockets and homes and who knows what. Bennett has been asking me if he could dress up like a bolt of fabric and stand outside the shop with a sign waving to people. He went out and practiced.

Floors - check

Voila! The floors. They are incredibly gorgeous. I can't believe how well they turned out.

There is our fireplace. It's not finished obviously but there it is. The painting will start tonight!!!

Human Sander

It has been interesting (to say the least) trying to juggle 4 kids - all boys for that matter- summer time, trying to sell our home and starting a new business. Anytime I need to go to the shop I either have to pack them all up or get a baby sitter. Most of the time though.....they come with me. The last time we were at the shop Max (pictured below) was running around in the hall and hit his head on the corner of the wall so hard we had to take him to get it stitched up. That all happened while I was meeting the Moda rep. Talk about professional....

Here is Max again, wanting to help sand the floor so he put the machine sander around him and rolled around. At least we can give him points for being creative!
And yes...I just said sand the floor. Here it is. Isn't it beautiful?! 4 layers and tar later, there she lies. The final sand happened today and the staining. I can't wait to have it all finished.
We also have finished the fireplace. It looks AMAZING! It will still be a little while before the whole place gets fully painted and you can see the style and feel really come out but for the mean time think - Anthropologie meets Restoration Hardware.

Today I was at the shop three times and I'm proud to report no injuries. That is a feat. I will end on that good note. Please feel free to continue to post comments in my "suggestion" box from my last post. Its always great to get others opinions and ideas.

Floors and more floors

We've been at this floor for weeks now. You'd think we'd be done already....but nope. There is beautiful hard wood that was buried under three nasty layers of carpet, tile and plywood. They all were glued to one another. Yuck!! Talk about a lot of work!

On a positive side (although I think everything about this business is positive) we have framed in our fireplace. I'm sooo excited about this detail. It will add the perfect touch to the shopping experience. I hope all our friends will love it just as much as we do.

Picking out colors today and I ordered some fabric last week!! EEKKK!! I would love some suggestions of what you would like to see in the shop. I know what I like but I want to know what you like too. Feel free to leave a comment. Think of it as a suggestion box.

I've had some very excited women ask me about the golden bus tour. Since I don't have my web site up yet (tapping fingers "patiently") I thought I could answer some of them on my blog.

Here are some bullet items that will be of importance...

~ Bring an extra suitcase for all the beautiful fabrics and kits you're going to buy ;)

~ There are two people per room. Yes, you may pick your roommate if you desire.

How do you like my new window display? I thought it was pretty amazing. Now if they could only sit still for more then 3 seconds....

Here is the demo work that is being done at the shop. The boys LOVE going and banning hammers through the wall. We knocked down 6 half walls. Pretty impressive for this young crew. I was thinking of renting them out by the hour. If you're interested, just let me know. :)

Meet Elsie. Isn't she the cutest? I'm not sure what I love more, the fabric or her little tail. This is just one of the kits that will be available through our website and at the shop. They make great shower gifts for moms to be.

Baby Shower for Sis

I threw my little sister a baby shower this past weekend. This is her with her love. She is due in about 2 weeks so the shower was just in time.

This picture banner are pictures of my sister when she was a baby. I thought that would be a fun touch. The owls make the banner super spunky. Very cute.

This is a quilt that I made for little peanute. The pattern comes from a German designer that I met at market. I scaled the pattern down so it was smaller. I love this pattern and can't wait to do a full size quilt. I think it works well in her nursery, what do you think?

Last but not least, the corsage. Isn't that the ugliest, cutest thing you've ever seen? I just had to make her wear that the whole time. That baby has to seriously be from the 70's. As much as she wanted to keep it (thats an overstatement) I took it back. This baby will definitely get resused again!

I am honored to be picked as one of the shops on this years Golden Ticket Bus Tour!

The Quilt Shoppe near Kansas City, MO puts on this amazing, fabulous bus tour every year. Kathy (who by the way is so wonderful and friendly) puts this tour together and invites the best fabric shops in the states to be apart of this experience for fabric lovers alike. I can't tell you how excited I am that she gave me my "golden ticket" and asked me to apart of this. She was so excited when I met her at quilt market and told her about my shop and my ideas. The next day came by invite.

Kathy was awarded in the quilt sampler 2008 top ten quilte shoppe in the US. Thats pretty amazing. And to think she wants my little shop to be on the tour....pretty awesome.

Another perk by being highlighted on her tour is that I get to fill a bus. There will be 52 seats available to go along on this 4 state tour of THE BEST fabric shops. From what I hear its a blast...it sounds like a blast. When Kathy announces the tour she sells out her individual bus in 6 days. It must be amazing if it sells out that quick.

"Ummm...don't I know you?"

In 1 day I went from thinking I had no connections to suddenly quite a few. Allow me to explain.

First, I don't overuse the word Best Friend (BFF)(stick with me here, it all make sense in a minute). I'm lucky enough to not only have one BFF but 5. Thats right, 5...well, 6 if you include my husband. Well, it use to be 7 but one moved away - thanks a lot Lisa.... I digress.
Anyway, I truely am blessed to have so many friends and a handful that are my "sisters". So when I refer to Laura as my BFF - she is. When I refer to Michelle as my BFF - she is..you get the picture.

Moving on. As we were walking up and down the many isles of market I noticed up ahead a booth called imaginesce. I thought to myself - wait a minute, I've seen that name and logo before at my BFF's house. I told Marc I thought that was Michelle's father's business. As I walked up I saw two of her brothers. "Wait a minute.....I know you!" It was really quite crazy. Michelle didn't even say anything about her family being there. I sat next to her two brothers and snapped a photo to send to her. She was trying to put it all together....she had forgotten that they were going to market and forgot I was too. She was trying to wrap her brain around how I was with her family that lived 2,000 miles away.

Suppose you had to be there.

Isn't this dress the cutest? I commented to the women who made the pattern and dress how adorable it was. She immediately went on and on how she loves anything Laura Gunn designs. She is her favorite designer. I just enjoyed hearing her talk about another one of my BFF's. I thought to myself. Yeah, I know her.

Again, I was walking the isles and came across this booth. The same thought, "Wait a minute....I know you." This is Camille. Her and her mother Bonnie design for Moda. She also has a book out. CRAZY!! She used to live in the same town in Idaho as me and we would hang out. Small world huh?

One night my husband and I went out to dinner. Outside there was this big sign. I could barely get the words out, "Hey...thats Steph!!". I know her too. She lived in St. Louis and we went to the same church. I used to take Pilates at her house. She kicked my butt every Saturday. She actually came to visit St. Louis 3 weeks ago. I had no idea she was the model for MS. Isn't she so cute??

Michael Miller had a hug booth and on the back side there were huge boards, each one a different color combination. They were all beautiful. As I walked by and looked I noticed a perticular picture. My thought, "Wait, I know her". My very good, talented friend Trenna Travis's daughter in right in the middle of that poster. Trenna designed these for Michael Miller. She is unbelieveable with the things she can create. Shes helping me with my business logo and image. I had no idea whe was working for Michael Miller so it came as a surprise when I saw her daughter.

Maybe I was all over the place in this blog but I just thought it was pretty cool that I kept running in, or seeing people that I knew. What are the chances?

Okay, I promise I am now done talking about Quilt Market. I will move on and prepare myself for the next market in fall. Whos with me??!

Quilt Market Part 3

Look how excited I look?! Kind of embarassing.....but, she is my most favorite designer. Anna Maria Horner. I made a messenger bag out of her laminate fabric and I really wanted her to sign the bag. She was so kind to do that. She said once someone asked her to sign their rear end. The clothes part of the rear end. After I heard that I didn't feel nearly as awakward asking her to sign the bag.

Yes....mission accomplished!!

Isn't she gorgeous? Her booth was breathtaking as is everything that she does. I can't wait to get her new line of fabric in my shop.

Quilt Market Part 2

This is just half - thats right, half of the vendors at Quilt Market. Talk about overwhelming!! I did my best to see everything and I'm pretty sure I did. It took me 3 full days but mission was accomplished. Another goal I had while I was there was meeting my most favorite designers. I couldn't help but get in a picture with a few of them.... Joel Dewberry. His stuff is so amazing and he is so down to earth and friendly. And apparently pretty tall - or ah, I'm just really short. Here is his website if you want to take a gander.

Next is Heather Bailey who is Laura Gunn's (Friday girl and BFF) sister in law. Talk about a talented family. Her designs are so inspiring and she too is incredibly friend. Here is her link.

Amy Butler. Who doesn't love Amy Butler. She has been a household name for years. It was such an honor to meet her. And just as a side note, she is bending down and I'm on my tippy toes. Again, not sure if shes just really tall or I'm just that short. I'm beginning to think the latter is true. Her link.

There of course are more designers that I had the priviledge of meeting. Its amazing to be surrounded by women (and men) who bring out this creative drive in you. They were all so encouraging and seemed so excited for me to be opening up a fabric shop. The industry is full of friendly, supportive folks. I'm so glad I went.....my shop will be better for it.

Quilt Market Part 1

Quilt Market was AWWWWESOME! I'm seriously still on a high. This industry has the nicest people I have ever met. Everyone was so wonderful and excited and encouraging to me as a new shop owner. I learned more then I thought I would and I have more and new ideas that I'm so excited about. I will have a few postings on market because there is just too much to tell in one post. First here are my two new friends. Jessica and Mom. I call her mom because, well - I don't think I even caught her first name. These two took me in, saved me at sample spree (for anyone who knows about sample spree, you know that you need body guards), we went to classes together and pretty much just hit it off right away. These fine folks are from the west and I'm sad that we don't live closer. And added plus, Jessica makes beautiful clothings/accessores for Joel Dewberry who I absolutely love. Hopefully she'll come out with her own line of patterns (hint, hint Jessica). She is awesome - you too mom.

Here are the quilts I rushed in last minute for Michael Miller. My wonderful friend Laura Gunn designed this fabric, and pattern and Michael Miller wanted to show it at their school house class. Tell me that blanket isn't the cutest little boys quilt you've ever seen? Its even hand quilted....beautiful.

These next two quilts were made by some super fun, talented ladies in the St. Louis Quilt Guild. The ladies in the classes thought they were amazing. I could hear everyone whispering...made me feel pretty cool that I was associated with such talented people.

Senior pictures?

Flash back to Senior pictures. It was really awkward to have pictures taken of just me. I get so uncomfortable and usually look like a dork most of the time. Either way, they needed to be done for my portfolio and for my website. What do you think? These are my three favorites. I think I'm only going to use 1 of them...maybe 2.

Things are progressing quite well. I should be done with my business plan in 2 weeks and then hopefully (fingers crossed) I will be able to get the rest of the funding.

I leave tomorrow for quilt market. I'm so excited. I will probably be exhausted when I get back. Maybe I should have my sister stay to help. Its like post pardum recovery...right? Well, not really but I could try that tactic and see where it gets me.

I would love some feedback on what things you would like to see in a fabric shop or what kind of classes would interested you, projects, or ideas. I need ideas from cool people like you!

The Shop

Here it is. Hopefully (fingers crossed) this will be the home of Fabric Nosherie. It is an amazing space in an amazing area. The space of corse needs lots of work but I'm excited for the transformation. The owner who is so kind, is willing to hold it short term for me until everything is in line. Maybe I'm over analyzing everything but with a new business, I don't think that is possible. I want to make sure everything is where it needs to be before I sign on that dotted line which is hopefully in about 6 weeks.

This is a picture of the outside looking down the street. Its really quite quaint. The shops all around it are so fitting for my shop.

I'm heading to quilt market next week. I'm super excited about that. I hope to meet some of my most favorite designers but mostly to get educated on owning a fabric shop. There is what they call School House and its exactly that. 30 minute classes and you rotate. Plus there are extra hour long classes that I'll be taking. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be overwhelmed but in the best sort of way. I have no doubt I will fill up two notebooks with information. And to make things even more wonderful....my sweet husband is coming with me! How many of you can drag your husbands to a fabric store let alone 3 full days of fabric. I'm feeling pretty lucky to have (I always feel lucky to have him :) ).

The Journey

Its true....I'm going to open a fabric store. I have been dreaming about this for years and finally got the courage to do it. Of course I'm still planning and researching and doing all of that so it will still be 4-5 months before it actually opens but hey - its going to happen and I couldn't be happier about it.

I found THE perfect place. I wasn't expecting to find a place so quickly but when I drove past it I could see my shop there. Its in Old Webster Groves. I'm still working on getting a lease agreement, nothing is in writting (yet), I haven't signed on the dotted line (yet), but I see that happening really soon.

I wanted to start this blog but I wanted to start a blog when everything was perfect. Maybe its the way I'm wired that everything has to be in its perfect place to even show anyone. I recieved some good advice, the advice was to get over myself and just start it now. So here we go. I'm inviting you on my journey. The journey of starting a business, the journey of the exciement and sometimes stress I feel, the journey of having a love of fabric and design. Won't you come with me??

I hope to gather some pictures to show you the idea I have for the feel of the store. This shop's environment is just as important to me as the fabric and products I sell. I would love feedback, ideas, opinions, words of encouragement - anything you feel like posting would be very welcomed.

I will post again soon but for the moment #4 needs his mommy.
